India has a great and unique narrative tradition, beginning with the folk epics, puranas and manakavyas. Indian novel, while a product of our encounter with the West, has also developed its own indigenous narrative modes, styles and techniques. It will be interesting to review both old and new Indian narratives through a proposed two-volume companion to Indian Narratives. The first volume will mostly have entries on texts, episodes and characters while the second will have texts, authors and characters.
